The Hunt for Red October is relentless. It's strength comes from keeping us constantly aware of who is pursuing who, where everyone is trying to get to and who is in danger from whom. The movie is also excellently edited. Much of the action occurs in confined spaces (similar to Flight Plan and Red Eye). If we overlook the unlikelihood of a cook being asked to witness a Soviet sub captain gaining possession of two keys to launch nuclear weapons (as a way to foreshadow the appearance of the cook holding a gun later in the story), there is very little to criticize. The submarines in The Hunt for Red October could easily be translated into a new aircraft or tank, and the ocean transformed into a desert or inter-stellar space. The Hunt for Red October has endless opportunities for adaptation! Includes separate download photographic list of characters.
